Mission
The mission of the Lantern Theater Company is to investigate and illuminate what is essential in the human spirit and the spirit of the times. We do this through the creation of a vigorous and intimate theatrical experience which is a joyous process of discovery for the company and our audience.
Description
Founded in 1994 by Charles McMahon and Michael Brophy, Lantern Theater Company has become one of the most accomplished small professional theaters in the Philadelphia area. In 1996, the Lantern moved into its current home at St. Stephen's Theater in Center City, where it continues to create productions that are both engrossing and entertaining for a loyal and expanding audience base. Lantern Theater Company has earned notable praise from both audiences and theater critics, and has been repeatedly recognized with the renowned Barrymore Award for Excellence in Theatre. The Lantern maintains that a theater needs to be a vibrant, contributing member of its community - exposing audiences to great theater, inviting participation in dialogue and discussion, education audience members about artistic and social issues, and employing the language of the theater to enrich learning in the classroom. Our affordable productions draw an audience of over 11,000 people each year from the greater Philadelphia region representing Philadelphia's diverse communities with regard to ethnicity, gender, and age.
