For Immediate Release: June 12, 2008
Media Contact: Christine Kozsuch, People’s Light & Theatre Company, 610.647.1900 x103

People’s Light & Theatre Company will extend the run of Sonja Linden’s I HAVE BEFORE ME A REMARKABLE DOCUMENT GIVEN TO ME BY A YOUNG LADY FROM RWANDA through June 29th on the Steinbright Stage. David Bradley directs. People’s Light & Theatre is located at 39 Conestoga Road, Malvern. For tickets call 610.644.3500 or visit www.peopleslight.org.

The production has received positive attention since opening May 28th. Michael Caruso of the Main Line Times writes, “If you like theater that challenges the mind, touches the heart and troubles the soul, then People’s Light & Theatre is the place for you…it’s a play you simply cannot miss.” Due to popular demand, People’s Light is adding six more shows to the run of this production. The extra performances will take place June 25th and June 26th at 7:30pm, June 27th at 8pm, June 28th at 2 and 8pm, and June 29th at 2pm. A full schedule for the remaining performances is attached.

I HAVE BEFORE ME A REMARKABLE DOCUMENT GIVEN TO ME BY A YOUNG LADY FROM RWANDA is a wonderful, human story about a young refugee of the 1994 Rwandan genocide who attends classes in writing at a refugee center in London. She meets a struggling and disillusioned middle-aged novelist who helps her to write honestly about her tragic experiences. The power of this connection through storytelling ultimately benefits them both and helps them to heal their very different wounds.

The play’s author, Sonja Linden, is an award-winning playwright, whose plays have been produced in London and in regional theatres in the UK, as well as in the United States and Australia. This play was written in response to her encounters with a number of young Rwandan refugees at the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, where she was a writer in residence from 1997-2004. She set up the Write to Life Project, a creative writing program that encourages clients to discharge painful experiences through the act of writing.

Tickets are $29 - $48, with special discounts available for students, seniors, and groups of 10 or more. Audiences are encouraged to join the artists after each Thursday night performance to discuss the production. In addition, a dinner discussion series takes place on Sunday, June 15th and Sunday June 22nd at 4pm at Places! Bistro. Visit www.peopleslight.org for details.
