Politics and fertility make strange bedfellows at City Theater Company this spring, when the irreverent troupe premieres a new play by award-winning playwright Drury Pifer. The world premiere of Homeland Security begins Friday, April 25th and runs through Saturday, May 10th in CTC’s new black box space: OperaDelaware Studios at 4 South Poplar Street on the Wilmington waterfront.

The wickedly funny plot is as American as apple pie, baseball, and orange alerts. An all-American couple—Congressman Ben Boone and his wife Celia—decide to adopt a baby. But thanks to a little bill called Homeland Security, which the congressman helped write, the government has different ideas. One bright Sunday morning a secret operative called Maxwell Keene arrives at the Boone home. With the help (or hindrance) of a sexy and ambitious Nurse and a drunk French-Mexican Doctor, Keene conducts a pre-adoption screening. By the time Keene and his disreputable staff depart, nothing will be the same for Ben and Celia—or America.

Resident City Theater Company playwright Drury Pifer, fresh from a London run of his hit play Strindberg in Hollywood, sums up his intent: “In writing ‘Homeland Security’, I didn’t aim to hold up a mirror to our world; I wanted to capture how it feels to live in it. To preserve our sanity and bypass media-babble, fiction grants us a parallel universe where we can laugh at the absurdities that darken to frustration and tragedy in the real world.”

Producing Artistic Director Michael Gray and his fellow company members have been working with Pifer for the past two years to bring Homeland Security’s larger-than-life characters to the stage. The world premiere production features the comedic talents of Jim Burns, Melissa Dammeyer, James Kassees, Kerry Kristine McElrone, and George Tietze. Since part of the City Theater Company mission is to produce new work, Gray is thrilled to be putting Homeland Security on its feet: “This play is CTC to the core, written specifically for our core group of actors. A gift from a wonderful playwright and a great friend to CTC, the piece not only taps into the bureaucratic insanity of the federal government, it taps into the beautifully wicked insanity of these talented actors.”
