The Good Fight Opens New Writing Aloud Season and Introduces New Writing Aloud Director Rebecca Wright For Immediate Release: October 16, 2007
On Monday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m., InterAct Theatre Company’s ninth season of Writing Aloud opens with The Good Fight, an evening of four diverse stories of people discovering what’s worth fighting for. The evening will also mark the introduction of Writing Aloud’s new director Rebecca Wright, a young director, writer, and dramaturg who has returned to InterAct and Philadelphia from London. ABOUT Rebecca Wright Rebecca Wright has a BA with high honors in English and Theatre Arts from the University of Michigan and an MA with distinction in Performance and Culture from Goldsmiths College, University of London. She was the recipient of the Hayden Award for Outstanding Student in the Humanities at the University of Michigan. She moved to Philadelphia in 2002 as InterAct’s literary intern and stayed on as a program assistant and assistant director of Writing Aloud until she left for London in 2005. She has worked with InterAct, Theater Catalyst, Eternal Spiral Project, New Paradise Laboratories, and, most recently, the Arden. Her local directing credits include Hold Please and The Ballad of John Wesley Reed. She has been a member of the Rittenhouse Writers Group and, for six years, a lecturer at the New England Literature Program. She is very excited to be back in town and looking forward to revamping Writing Aloud in the coming season. ABOUT The Good Fight Presented on Monday, November 12, The Good Fight features four penetrating stories of people battling the hardships in their lives and learning how to fight for what they believe in. The Good Fight is the first program in the 2007-2008 season of InterAct Theatre Company’s award-winning series Writing Aloud, featuring works by contemporary writers read aloud by Philadelphia’s best actors. Tickets for the performance, held at 7:00 p.m. at The Adrienne at 2030 Sansom Street, are $15.00 for general admission or $10.00 for InterAct subscribers. Seating is limited, so advance reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 215-568-8079. Discount subscriptions and group rates are also available. The November 12 Writing Aloud opens with “The Boy,” Written by Carol F. Dixon (of Breinigsville, PA) and read by Delante Keyes. “The Boy” is a coming of age story about an adolescent boy meeting his father for the first time and, as a result, beginning to learn how to be strong in conflict and how to be a man. “An Eye for a Tooth,” written by Vashti Bandy (of Philadelphia, PA) and read by Nako Aondadoaji. “An Eye for a Tooth” introduces us to Sade who is being haunted by her dead aunt. The haunting sends her fiance out the door and pushes her to the bedside of her estranged dying mother for one final haunting good-bye. “The Corsican,” written by JB Traino (of Wilmington, DE) and read by Aaron Cromie. In “The Corsican” a pudgy pubescent boy takes his life into his hands by threatening the toughest neighborhood bully with surprising results. Our final story of the season is “Killer,” Written by Tally Brennan (of Philadelphia, PA) and read by Sara Valentine. “Killer” charts the homecoming of Daphne, with her partner Lisa in tow, as the two of them land smack dab back in the middle of the macabre fight Daphne’s been having with her ferocious mother Virginia ever since she was a little girl. ABOUT THE WRITING ALOUD PROGRAM Founded by David Sanders, Writing Aloud was established in 1999 to present diverse voices in contemporary fiction by the region’s best writers, read on stage by professional actors. Quickly establishing itself as the region’s premiere reading series, Writing Aloud has attracted sold-out audiences, has been featured in special broadcasts on WHYY-FM public radio, and is a recipient of Philadelphia Magazine’s 2001 “Best of Philly” award. This season, Rebecca Wright takes over the directorship with hopes to spend the coming season building upon the program’s strengths and taking a fresh look at how it can be even better.
