HATG Theater Company Starving Artists’ Monologue Slam 10/24 at 7pm Fergie’s Pub-1214 Sansom Street Tickets: 10.00 at door/includes a drink/Participants and Audience For Immediate Release: September 25, 2007
Hovering above the Gutter Theater Company is proud to bring their Starving Artists’ Monologue Slam back for their third season on October 24th at 7pm. This event allows local actors and actresses to perform in a welcoming environment and also gives them a chance to win money. Actors get to perform their monologues in front of local theater professionals and get instant feedback while networking in Philadelphia’s emerging theater community. The Starving Artists’ Monologue Slam gives actors an outlet to perform their best work in front of theater professionals and their peers. They can fine-tune a performance, try out a new monologue, make a contact and have fun while doing it. HATG takes out the stress and tension of an audition. This is the perfect opportunity for actors new to the area to meet other actors and theater professionals. The slam is an actor’s jam session. The slam for the audience provides an opportunity to have a behind the scenes look into actors at their best: performing their monologues that are normally only seen at an audition behind closed doors. The audience can meet new artists and find out about new theater in the Philadelphia area. Past judges for the monologue slam have been, Bill Felty: casting director for the Wilma Theater, Jane Stojak: founding and managing director for the Triangle Theater, Donna Snow: acting head for Temple University’s MFA program, Aileen McCulloch: Executive Director for Vagabond Acting Troupe, Madi Distefano: founder of Brad Productions and David Ingram: Philadelphia theater director, actor and Temple University Theater Professor. This coming year we will see new faces and some returning judges from the Philadelphia theater community. I highly recommend this. It is a great way to pull out your grade A stuff and actually get some quick response from it! -Aileen McCulloch-Vagabond Acting Troupe I will take with me fond memories of the night when actors just got together to have fun! -Amy Lewis-Philadelphia Actor The October 24th slam will be the Halloween Slam with a costume contest, free candy, a special cold reading slam that will include monologues from your favorite Halloween and classic scary and sometimes campy movies. The host for the evening will be Mark Mackner founder of The Valerie Solanas’ Players who have produced 14 original productions in various venues throughout the city. They specialize in a dark/absurdist/surrealist style of humor that celebrates everything that's indecent and wrong in American culture, and has earned a small cult following in Philadelphia. Notable works include the now legendary play Wake Up, Paddington, You Worthless Shit!, the wildly popular Telepathic Alcoholic Teenage Punk Rock Psycho Sluts! and the shattering Leopard Girl verses Soul Sucker in the Evolutionary Arena of Doom! Mark Mackner is the perfect host for the Halloween Slam with his brand of theater. There are three ways to get involved with the October 24th slam! You can pre-register to do the three minute monologue to be judged by local theater professionals. The prize: $100-cash!
