Actors Excel in Exile - Theatre Exile earns the most non-musical accolades

For Immediate Release: August 10, 2007
Media Contact: Bryan S. Clark, Theatre Exile, 215.922.4462

We have been called the "go-to company for fierce and sexy theatre" (Philadelphia Inquirer). We have been recognized for our outstanding productions and directors. We have been named "Theatre Company of the Year" (Philadelphia Weekly) But this season, Theatre Exile takes its place as the best company for a Philadelphia actor.

Theatre Exile was honored with seven Barrymore nominations for our 2006-2007 season, five of which celebrated our amazing casts. Red Light Winter, our erotic season opener, was nominated for three Barrymore Awards. Charlotte Ford was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Christina. This is Exile's second nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress, following Amanda's Schoonover's win for Exile last year. Ian Merrill Peakes also was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his role as Davis in Red Light Winter. Theatre Exile's own associate artistic director, Matt Pfeiffer was honored with a nomination for Outstanding Leading Actor for his portrayal of Matt in Red Light Winter. Red Light Winter stands alone this season as the only production to have an entire three person cast nominated for individual performances.

Matt Pfeiffer was not only nominated for his leading role in Red Light Winter, but also for his Outstanding Direction of Glengarry Glen Ross. Theatre Exile's runaway hit Glengarry Glen Ross also walked away with a nomination for Outstanding Ensemble in a Play. Our all-star, all-Philly cast proved to be amazing individually, with Harry Philibosian earning a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor with his aching portrayal of Shelly Levine. This is the second year in a row where Exile has earned two Outstanding Supporting Actors nominations. With a nomination for Outstanding Ensemble and Outstanding Direction, Glengarry proved to be one of the best shows of the season, bringing Exile our seventh nomination for the season for Outstanding Overall Production.

Exile's Associate Artistic Director, Matt Pfeiffer, set a new precedent for excellence with an amazing double nomination. For the first time in Barrymore history, nominations for Outstanding Leading Actor and Outstanding Direction of a Play were given to the same artist. It is no wonder that Pfeiffer has been selected as a finalist for the F. Otto Haas Awards for an Emerging Philadelphia Theatre Artist. Exile's resident set designer, Matt Saunders, also was named as a finalist, following his amazing design for Glengarry Glen Ross.

With five nominations for performances spread across two productions, Theatre Exile is happy to have brought home more acting nominations for a non-musical than any other company in Philadelphia. And our future looks even brighter. Exile is proud to announce that 4 of the 5 F. Otto Haas Award finalists will be working in our season opener, Mr. Marmalade. Two of our directors for next season are currently nominated for Barrymore Awards. Our 2007-2008 productions will feature performances from seven actors currently nominated for Barrymore Awards for performance in the 2006-2007 season. With the success of Killer Joe, Red Light Winter and Glengarry Glen Ross, Theatre Exile shows that in Philadelphia, Exile is the "go-to company" for actors.

Theatre Exile is a nonprofit theater company dedicated to enhancing the cultural experiences of all Philadelphians through the staging of works that engage the imagination. We produce risky and challenging plays that contain a sense of true Philadelphia grit and passion. We are constantly striving to reach out to new theater audiences throughout the community by presenting both new works as well as established plays that are often reinterpreted in original ways and/or held in unique site-specific locations.

We believe in freedom of expression formulated through innovation, exploration and provocation. At the same time, we provide a safe and creative environment in which local artists can grow and experiment and ultimately, find their own voice.
