Taking Steps at Hedgerow Theatre, March 23 - April 29

For Immediate Release: March 7, 2007
Media Contact: Margie Royal, Hedgerow Theatre, 610.565.4211

Hedgerow Theatre continues its spring comedy series with a revival of Alan Ayckbourn’s 1979 farce, Taking Steps March 23 through April 29 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Hedgerow alumnus Ken Marini will direct the production.

Mr. Marini, a co-founding member of People’s Light and Theatre Company, returns to Hedgerow yearly to direct a play. Recent plays he has staged for Hedgerow include A Lion In Winter, Romeo and Juliet and The Compleat Works of William Shakespeare (abridged).

In Taking Steps, audiences will meet Roland Crabbe, who to please his wife, is about to buy a dilapidated haunted house with the assistance of a solicitor who can’t complete a sentence. What Roland doesn’t know is that his wife has other plans which she secretly confides to her brother. Pills, staircases and a wayward fiancee are added to the mix in this brilliant comedy about love and freedom by one of England’s master-writers, Alan Ayckbourn.

Mr. Ayckbourn is the Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre and one of the world’s most popular and prolific professional playwrights. He has written 70 full plays and more than 20 other revues and plays for children. He is also an internationally acclaimed director, who Arthur Miller said directed the definitive version of his play A View From The Bridge. In 1997, Alan Ayckbourn was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to British theatre.

Hedgerow Theater’s recent productions of Ayckbourn plays include Bedroom Farce(1996) and The Norman Conquests trilogy: The Norman Conquests, Absurd Person Singular and Absent Friends (1997). The Hedgerow cast will include Mary Lee Bednark (last seen in Hedgerow’s production of A Lion In Winter, 2005) and Hedgerow ensemble favorites Dave Christoffersen (last seen in Hedgerow’s summer’s hit Out Of Order) and Newton Buchanan. They will join guest artists Rob Hargraves and Michelle Guidry and Hedgerow theater fellow Keon Mojaheri for a comic romp up and down the stairs.

Tickets are $22 for Thursday and Sunday performances and $25 on Friday and Saturday, with $3 discounts for seniors and $10 for age 18 and under. Special performances include a meet-the-cast post show reception March 30 and a Sunday Pre-show Tea April 1.
