Adapted for the stage by Linus Speary, Treasure Island is the unforgettable story of young Jim Hawkins, son of an innkeeper in 18th Century England, who finds himself on a race across the high seas with a band of mutineers in search of a secret buried treasure. Pirates, peril, and pieces of eight awaits all who seek the lost bounty of Captain Flint. Treasure Island runs November 8-14, 2006. Tickets are $6.50 for children, $8.00 for adults ($5.00 for School-Time performances) and may be purchased by calling the DTC box office at 302.594.1100 or in person at 200 Water Street, Wilmington. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.delawaretheatre.org.

First State Children’s Theater production of Treasure Island is a 60-minute play adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic pirate tale, best enjoyed by ages 6 and up. Robert Louis Stevenson finished Treasure Island in 1883, and to this day, it is still known as literature’s most fascinating pirate adventure story. It is a marvelous fictional account of young Jim Hawkins, who happens upon a treasure map and finds himself alongside ruthless buccaneers, embracing the dangerous experiences known only to those that seek true buried treasure. Robert Louis Stevenson remarked on his masterpiece with, “If this don’t fetch the kids, why, they have gone rotten since my day.”

In order to fuel our ever-prominent passion of pirates, DTC and First State Children’s Theater (FSCT) are teaming up. Both professional theatre companies strive to offer productions that interest the Wilmington and Delaware communities while providing the highest standard in family entertainment. Michael Boudewyns, Artistic Director of FSCT said, “We chose Treasure Island because it’s a great story. It’s possibly the best pirate story ever written. It is a perfect example of what the First State Children’s Theater is committed to.” Founded in 2004, FSCT is a professional, year-round theatre company staging and touring classic plays and adaptations of classic stories for families and young audiences throughout the state of Delaware.

Since her arrival in 2004 to Delaware’s largest regional professional theatre, DTC Producing Director Anne Marie Cammarato had plans of introducing shows for young audiences into the theatre’s seasons. “Providing quality theatre programming for children and families is essential. Children are our future audiences. Partnering with FSCT is beneficial for both companies and our community. Having DTC present FSCT’s production will provide this small, spirited, well-trained company with a platform to launch their state-wide tour of Treasure Island, introduce a wider audience to DTC, and offer the Wilmington community another opportunity to enjoy exceptional professional theatre.”
