TEN YEARS IN EXILE - With a Highly Acclaimed Season Behind Us, Exile Looks to the Future

For Immediate Release: August 17, 2006
Media Contact: Bryan S. Clark, Theatre Exile, 215.922.4462

Theatre Exile celebrates our tenth anniversary with our 2006-2007 season, and we have a lot to celebrate! Our KILLER JOE pulled in seven Barrymore Nominations; more than any other non-musical production, including nominations for Outstanding Ensemble, Outstanding Direction and Outstanding Overall Production. Packed with exceptional writers, tense standoffs and bold stories, Theatre Exile promises our 2006-2007 season to deliver more “dependably unpredictable” theater.

Opening our season will be RED LIGHT WINTER, by 2006 Pulitzer Prize finalist, Adam Rapp. The newest work from New York’s hottest playwright, RED LIGHT WINTER will feature Philadelphia favorites, Ian Merrill Peakes, Charlotte Ford and Matt Pfeiffer and will be directed by Exile’s artistic director, Joe Canuso. RED LIGHT WINTER tells the story of two friends who share a mysterious prostitute from Amsterdam’s Red Light District and become part of an irrational and irresolvable love triangle. Erotic fixation and a deep loneliness bind the three Gen X-ers together in a world of drugs, sex and depression. But when you have nothing, any fantasy will do. RED Light WINTER is for mature audiences, containing nudity and sexually explicit situations.

Theatre Exile is proud to present our HEARTS & SOLES as part of our Philly Originals Festival in February. Featured in the Philadelphia New Play Festival: Where Theater Begins, a city wide program of the Theater Alliance of Greater Philadelphia, our PHILLY ORIGNALS will be a multi-pronged exploration and presentation of works originated here in Philadelphia. The highlight of our festival will be HEARTS AND SOLES, an evening of short of works by Bruce Graham, Michael Hollinger and Arden Kass. HEARTS & SOLES is a sexy, smart look at the misfiring of human connection, from lovers to friends to fathers. Through out the three week run of HEARTS & SOLES, Theatre Exile will also present a special event each Monday night to further celebrate the art of Philadelphia’s playcrafting, past, present and future. Featuring writer’s symposiums and talk backs, the first Monday will feature a tribute to Philadelphia’s greatest writers of the past, with the following Monday featuring a staged reading of an up and coming Philadelphia playwright. To celebrate our own history and growth over the years, Theatre Exile will bring back the original cast of BELLMONTE AVENUE SOCIAL CLUB for a one night staged reading of our power house production.

Closing out our season will be GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright David Mamet. Directed by Matt Pfeiffer, GLENGARRY will feature an all star cast, including Harry Philibosian, Joe Canuso and William Zielinski. Among the most beloved, most referenced works of the modern theatrical cannon, GLENGARRY is a searing portrait of America’s definition of capitalism and masculinity. Great battles between salesmen are waged, with the almighty lead on the line. GLENGARRY is a perfect match for exile’s commitment to bring Philadelphia audiences challenging plays exploring our human need for high stakes and passion.

Theatre Exile is a nonprofit theater company dedicated to enhancing the cultural experiences of all Philadelphians through the staging of works that engage the imagination. We produce risky and challenging plays that contain a sense of true Philadelphia "grit and passion". We are constantly striving to reach out to new theater audiences throughout the community by presenting both new works as well as established plays that are often reinterpreted in original ways and/or held in unique site specific locations.

We believe in freedom of expression; formulated through innovation, exploration and provocation. At the same time, we provide a safe and creative environment in which local artists can grow and experiment and ultimately, find their own voice.
