Titanic premieres at The Media Theatre in May For Immediate Release: May 4, 2006 “Titanic”, the Broadway musical set on the legendary ocean liner, is having its Philadelphia/ Wilmington regional professional premiere at The Media Theatre May 3-28. Directed by Jesse Cline, “Titanic” is the story of the magnificent ship’s maiden voyage, told with glimpses into the lives of the many different people on the ‘unsinkable’ creation: Captain E. J. Smith and First Officer Murdoch, the ship’s designer Thomas Andrews, the managing director of International Mercantile Marine and owner of the ship J. Bruce Ismay, the First Class notable millionaires Col. John Jacob Astor, Isidor Strauss, and Benjamin Guggenheim, as well as the Third Class passengers who yearn for a better life in America. The first act of the musical introduces us to the passengers, and Act Two allows us to glimpse their frustration with the situation and their hope to meet again. Cline, who is the Artistic Director of The Media Theatre, said, “This musical is extremely relevant to the Philadelphia region, as two dozen prominent families from the area were represented on the RMS Titanic, including the Wideners. All of them exulted in the wonders of technology and progress, believing they were passengers on a ship of dreams.” Peter Stone and Maury Yeston’s musical will have the largest cast seen on The Media Theatre stage in recent years, including Broadway’s Joel Briel in the role of Captain Smith and James Zannelli as Andrews. “We are a member of Actor’s Equity Association,” Cline explained. “Many of our performers have New York, National Tour, and major regional credits. We also have professional performers from the Philadelphia region in every musical.” Philadelphia performers include Sarah Gliko and Henrique Ramos. Delaware County actors in the show include Wallingford’s Christopher deProphetis and Media’s Roger Ricker. Yeston’s score includes “The Largest Moving Object”, “What A Remarkable Age Is This”, and the lovely “Still”. Cline adds, “The emphasis of the show is on fully staged ensemble numbers, along with lovely ballads. It is almost a complete merging of operetta and contemporary music theatre styles. It’s a show for everyone, of any age.” “Titanic” is at The Media Theatre May 3-28, with matinee and evening performances.
