Hunger Theatre Presents Sam Shepard’s Contemporary Classic TRUE WEST May 11 - June 10, 2006 at the Christ Church Neighborhood House

For Immediate Release: April 7, 2006
Media Contact: Hunger Theatre, 215.545.0876

Hunger Theatre is proud to present Sam Shepard’s contemporary comic classic, True West. Hunger Theatre is looking to present a rewarding interpretation of what many consider to be one of Shepard’s greatest plays. It is a work that is part of his famous cycle of ‘family’ plays he created in the 1970’s and 80’s. It centers around two brothers who reunite and attempt to collaborate on a Hollywood script. Two of our most successful productions, critically and financially, were Shepard’s States of Shock and Buried Child, both of which were performed at the Walnut Street Studio Five Theater. We are looking forward to provide Philadelphians with another taste of one of America’s premier playwrights.

Our last production in Philadelphia was a staging of Samuel Beckett’s Endgame, at the Triangle Theater in the Fall of 2005. Doug Keating of the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote, “Engrossing…this production makes Beckett’s rich and ambiguous play linger in the mind. Thinking about it afterward becomes as much a part of the Endgame experience as seeing it performed.” We are now excited to tackle the raw and wonderfully humorous play that is True West, with a bold and highly physical staging.

Thomas Bazar directs a strong and versatile cast. Mr. Bazar will play the volatile and brutish “Lee”. Playing opposite Bazar will be Vincent Quintiliani in the role of “Austin”, his brother. Austin, a Hollywood screenwriter, is the complete opposite of his erratic brother. Yet, a role reversal takes place during the course of the play. Scott Robertson will play “Saul”, the agent/producer both brothers are trying to woo, and Gloria Salmansohn will tackle the role of the vacuous “Mother”.

Bazar directs with precision, revealing the absurd underpinnings of True West with humor and primal truth. Why go? To celebrate and experience the work of one America’s great playwrights and a writer we greatly admire.
