CALVARY CHURCH The fringe festival is moving into three University City venues this year for the first time, and a new alliance, the 40th Street Arts Task Force, has begun spearheading a network of publicity, advice, and support among artists in the area. New restaurants and shops have sprung up along the commercial corridors of Lancaster and Baltimore Avenues, and the housing prices are soaring. Thanks to the determined efforts of University City District and the University of Pennsylvania, among other organizations, University City is undoubtedly a new hub for business, culture, and the arts. The Calvary Center for Culture and Community (CCCC) is a 501c3 organization, based in Calvary Church at 48th and Baltimore Avenue, following this trend for growth and development. Since 1994 Calvary Center for Culture and Community (CCCC) has raised money to maintain and begin to restore the Church in its entirety, and has introduced several community groups, professional 501c3 organizations, and public service programs to make use of the building on a constant, thriving, daily basis. The church itself consists of multiple office rooms, a large chapel, gym, several classrooms, as well as the beautiful 1000-seat Sanctuary, complete with Tiffany windows. Curio Theatre and CCCC came together in late 2004 to work jointly to convert the Sanctuary into a professional theatre in University City. The Sanctuary has remained unused and in a state of disrepair for the past 25 years but is now undergoing massive improvements thanks to the generosity of the William Penn Foundation and Keystone. With more than one third of a million raised from a combination of donations, foundation grants, and government grants, just 1 million more is required to complete the work. For the next 3 years, Curio will perform their season on a specially designed stage in the 199-seat Chapel while the money is raised and the Sanctuary work completed. Curio Theatre School and the company offices are also based in a building adjacent to the church at 815 S. 48th Street. The school opens its doors on September 17th 2005 with the fall semester of classes for children and adults. Looking for somewhere new to get your theatre fix? Head for University City....
